SLEEPINESS

Sometimes when doing a mindfulness practice that cultivates relaxation and tranquillity, we may fall asleep. This is even more common when we are sleep deprived. When that happens, it becomes hard to stay alert and awake, even more when entering REM sleep where the dream state starts.

If you become drowsy, you could use one of the following strategies. First, if your eyes are closed, open them. Receiving more light may stimulate you just enough to remain alert and awake. Second, if your situation allows, use spoken labels (read distractions). Third, you may also try to stretch your body or stand up. It is quite rare that people fall asleep while standing!
