MindfulNESS FOR PARENTS

Mindful “Kangaroo Care”

Kangaroo Mother Care is widely practiced around the world. Kangaroo Mother Care is a program made for low birth weight babies and their mothers which primarily consists of mothers holding their babies skin to skin to keep them warm and promote breastfeeding.

Premature babies (i.e. babies born before 37 weeks of gestation) are often low birth weight. According to some studies, mothers who deliver premature babies often report symptoms of acute stress disorder within the week after they gave birth. The stress that these mothers experience can be so intense that up to 50% of the mothers also report symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder after delivering a premature baby.

Mindfulness has been shown to decrease stress and anxiety in a variety of contexts including reducing stress of parents who had a premature low birth weight baby admitted to the Newborn Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Nobody has ever studied mindfulness intervention during Kangaroo Care. Our question is: Does mindfulness during Kangaroo Care decreases stress, symptoms of anxiety and depression in mothers of premature babies?

results of the Mindful Kangaroo Care studies are now available!
