See

When your eyes are open,

  • you can see the shapes and colours of the world

  • you can see objects, people and places

  • even when the night comes, you may see shadows, some brighter areas where there is still some light reflecting on them and zones that are entirely dark

  • you see all of that

When your eyes are closed,

  • your visual field is replaced by your mental screen — the place where a mental image would appear that is most often located behind or in front of your closed eyes

  • you may see some darkness or brightness

  • you may see in colours or shades of gray

  • you may see images of objects, people and places, the images might be vivid or amorphous

  • you may see mental representations of your body, the objects or the place that was around you before you closed your eyes.

  • you may as well have a mental representation of the space around you where sounds would occur, for instance

Let’s do a little experiment. At the end of this paragraph, close your eyes and try to visualize your favourite food item. Pay attention to where your mental screen is. Your mental screen is where you see images in your mind, in this case, this is where you see your favourite food item. Most people have their mental screen just behind their closed eyes or just in front of their closed eyes. Explore what is true for you. And still with your eyes closed, notice how vivid or amorphous is your food item. Notice if the image that you see appears in colours or in various shades of gray. Some people can barely visualize anything and others can see with great clarity. Ok close your eyes and discover how is your experience of mental images!
